What's the best way to read the Bible as a piece of literature?

I want to read the Bible for the sake of understanding Judeo-Christian belief, in particular Christian. However, I'm not sure if I should read the Bible from front to back, or if I should start with the New Testament, or with a particular Gospel. How should I read the Bible for the first time, for best understanding of its contents?
