This driving me crazy. I have some electronic meters that I use infrequently such as a multi-meter.?

I take the batteries out so that they don't leak electrolyte inside of the meters and damage them. However, when I want to use those batteries again in the meters, they are dead after being out of the devices. How can I keep my batteries alive so that I can use them again? I hate buying batteries all the time.
