Is this a good first paragraph for my essay?

In war, certain motives for fighting are in every man’s mind and heart. Too often people conquer other peoples for selfish reasons, such as wealth, land, or power. However, the victims of such acts of hate defend themselves for more moral reasons like pride, determination, and, most importantly freedom. It is thes strong emotions in the weaker peoples' minds that make them feel obligated to plunge into a suicidal battle with horrible odds. In the novel April Morning, these powerful causes are demonstrated flawlessly by the people of Lexington when they fought the British during their march to Concord. They were marching for the retrieve of the defiant colonist’s weaponry and ammunition.
