Is life necessary for a universe to exist? Is existence a universe aware of itself?

From the tiny universe of the smallest bacterium to the observable and theoretically extended universe of humans; is consciousness necessary for a universe to exist? Could the earliest form of life, however simple, possess a basic awareness of its own tiny universe; the first step to the existence of the universe that created it?
